In 2023, under the slogan “United for quality education” MAPFRE volunteers took action and helped make a positive impact on society. There are currently 750 million adults worldwide–two-thirds of them women–who are illiterate. In addition, one out of every five children between the ages of 6 and 17 in the world does not go to school. This is the reality for many people and that is why MAPFRE’s volunteering team wants to bridge these social gaps and act as a driver for the social change that the world needs. The activities that we run within the Education area contribute directly to SDG 4 - “Quality education”. For this reason, under the same slogan and with the same goal, we promote the connection of volunteers, who feel part of a global team. In 2023, more than 160 activities were organized around the world and over 1,000 volunteers from 18 countries and more than 60 cities took part. This global volunteering action benefited more than 7,000 people, especially children, people with disabilities and those with limited resources. Some of the activities that took place to celebrate Global Volunteering Day such as those held in Brazil, where a total of 17 activities were carried out in 5 different cities. The activities organized included storytelling in schools, and talks focused on accessibility, financial education, diversity and inclusion. In an effort to inspire and underline the importance of study and education, the volunteers shared their knowledge, and offered advice and career guidance to young people. In Colombia, this day was celebrated in 18 different cities. The volunteers ran very creative activities for children, such as literary, reading and storytelling workshops, as well as mural painting in schools, educational workshops on road safety, the environment and financial education, and they also created eco-friendly vegetable gardens in schools, along with many other initiatives. In Mexico, volunteers from Guadalajara, Querétaro, Puebla, Mexico City, Tijuana and Monterrey joined in with Global Volunteering Day by running workshops using materials they developed themselves on the Sustainable Development Goals, courses on Excel, road safety, health and healthy eating, first aid and personal finance. Colombia In Colombia, on August 18, our volunteers participated in a literary project with the children and young people of the “Altos de Cazucá community”, a highly vulnerable area of Colombia. For this purpose, there was a prior campaign to collect books and stories in good condition. On this day, the volunteers delivered the books collected to the library and gave workshops on different subjects such as reading habits, environmental conservation and healthcare through sporting activities. In addition, a community garden was established to promote the importance of healthy eating and teamwork. Using the Dan Zass methodology and tools from contemporary dance, dance theater and improvisation techniques, the dancers with functional disabilities and MAPFRE volunteers enjoyed a day where body expression was used as another way to communicate and they were able to create incredible moments full of emotion and tenderness. Italy In Italy on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, our volunteers, in collaboration with Cologno Monzese Town Council painted and installed three red benches in the town. These benches symbolize the campaign to raise awareness of violence against women, as, even today, hundreds of women in Italy are killed just because they are women. Peru In Peru, on April 29, a visit was organized, with the support of Cesal, to the After-School Educational Support Center (CAE) in Huachipa. Volunteers prepared breakfast for approximately 75 children between the ages of 5 and 12, and then formed four groups–with around 20 children in each–to provide educational sessions on computers, English, cooking and storytelling. At the end of the day, each group presented their achievements in the main courtyard, giving a demonstration of what they had learned. This institution, founded in 1954, is located in the province of San Pedro de Macorís, where it takes in underprivileged children, some of which are disabled, offering them integral care, access to healthcare, quality education and a home that boosts their emotional and overall stability.
