Garry Winogrand was an avid sports fan and in the 1950s he began to take photographs of athletes. Interested in moving bodies, he would portray athletes in action. On December 7th, 1970, a memorable boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Argentinian boxer Óscar (Ringo) Bonaventura took place at Madison Square Garden.
In the image one does not observe the fight, but rather Ali during a press conference held in order to promote the match. The American boxer appears imposing in a white robe that stands out amid the thicket of microphones. His figure can be distinguished among the dozens of white reporters dressed in dark suits who look up to him attentively. Winogrand’s photograph is distinct from others taken at that moment, not only because he is focused on the boxer, but because he portrays the media frenzy Ali generated as a cultural icon.
The photograph is part of the series entitled Public Relations that addresses the role of mass media at different public events. The series, along with the eponymous catalogue, was exhibited at MoMA in 1977.
