Centro Social da Musgueira works for children and young people in Portugal
Educational activities focused on emotional intelligence, digitalization as a form of education and access to the labor market
Current Project
The Centro Social Da Musgueira was founded 60 years ago to support the residents of the former Bairro da Musgueira, one of the largest slums in the city of Lisbon. As part of the Upper Lisbon area redevelopment project, this population was relocated to social housing. The Da Musgueira center gradually adapted and responded to the needs of the locals. It currently offers services to 600 people a day through its Early Childhood Education rooms, the Media Library for young people, Study Rooms, Day Centre, Home Support Service, Job Placement Office and Vocational Training for the unemployed, among other things.
The 100 children who attend the center’s CSM Kindergarten benefit from weekly sessions on emotional intelligence offered through the Saber y Sentir [Know and Feel] project, and any of these children who need specific guidance and therapy also have access to these sessions.
The institute has a Community Center that welcomes young people in its Media Library and Study Rooms.
To provide users with access to new digital technologies and help them become familiar with them, the Centro Social Da Musgueira is also building a Digital Library, which will be equipped with the necessary computer equipment and software. The Digital Library will be available every day between 3 pm and 9 pm (opening hours of these institutions) for “free access”. Educational sessions (educational and entertainment workshops) led by a digital facilitator will be held every day for one hour. Teenagers and young people who use the center will be able to benefit from these sessions.
Young people who attend CSM training courses or who are supported by the Job Placement Office will also be able to use the Digital Library as a tool to boost their search for employment.
