The people of Latin America, who were already experiencing economic difficulties before the pandemic, have seen their situation worsen due to the health and economic crisis caused by COVID-19. According to estimates by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the region ended 2020 with the appalling figure of 231 million people living in poverty (37.3 percent of the population) and a further 96 million living in extreme poverty (15.5 percent).

In view of this emergency situation in LATAM, Fundación MAPFRE has taken action by mobilizing an extraordinary fund of 10 million euros to contribute to the rollout of a total of 62 projects to help more than 200,000 people living in vulnerable situations in 18 countries.

This exceptional fund is intended to address the basic needs of the families affected and to fight against malnutrition, deliver medical supplies where they are most needed, provide quality education for the comprehensive development of children and teens, facilitate access to employment for people at risk of exclusion, particularly woman and people with disabilities, and support training and digitization projects to ensure that no one is left out of the labor market.
