30,000 Christmas lunches for vulnerable families
We have joined the World Central Kitchen, the NGO set up by chef José Andrés with 400 of our volunteers, to make Christmas day a little better for families with difficulties
Social Action
The menu has already been decided: Roast turkey with pickled winter fruits, red cabbage Segovian style and truffle mashed potatoes. Dessert will be Christmas sweets.
The 21st, 22nd and 23rd of December will be quite hectic. The World Central Kitchen (WCK) set up in the Mercado de Santa Eugenia in Madrid, the venue from which the organization has distributed more than a million meals since last April, will literally be smoking hot! Our volunteers will be following the orders of Chefs Pepa, Carles Tejedor and Olivier de Berroche, to help wherever needed: kitchens, logistics or distribution.
The objective is to prepare 30,000 Christmas Eve dinners in three days, which will be delivered to vulnerable families on December 24th in the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium, with the help of different entities and social organizations.
The team is aware that this is not just giving out a meal, but knowing that for many, it will be the only meal of the day. There are people who would not have eaten anything that day, like many other days with difficulties finding food. 3.6 tons of “polvorones” and “mantecados de Antequera”, 7 tons of turkey, 6 tons of red cabbage and 6 tons of mashed potatoes, are just some of the quantities the kitchen will handle. Soon the pans and the logistics will begin their mission.
Last March the WCK launched its first kitchen in Spain, reaching a total of 18 facilities and 500 distribution points in 24 Spanish cities. So far more than 50,000 volunteers have cooked and handed out over 2.5 million meals in Spain. What’s their goal? A hot plate of food to help through a disaster.
Madrid has become the WCK operations base for the European continent, from which the response to natural disasters throughout the continent will be coordinated.
This Christmas will be strange for everyone, but we need it to be better for those who have been hit hardest by the pandemic and its consequences. We are going to work together. Now more than ever.
