The Suite Vollard is made up of 100 copper etchings that Picasso made between 1930 and 1937 in no particular order which were commissioned by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard. The techniques Picasso applied were varied: burin, etching, aquatint, gouache, dry point, and occasionally the combination of several techniques.
This etching represents the moment when a man pounces on a woman in what seems to be a violent sexual act. However, the static quality of the scene and the representation of bodies as a mass of rounded forms do not provoke rejection on the part of the spectator. The woman is probably Marie-Thérèse Walter, who Picasso met in January of 1927 and who became his lover. The man, depicted with an elderly appearance, is a reflection of the artist himself.
