This etching is part of the Suite Vollard, produced by Picasso between 1930 and 1937. The parable of the sculptor allowed Pablo Picasso to tackle the subject of the doubling between the sculptor and the sculpture, and the model and his or her representation.
In the works he produced from May 17, 1933 onward, Picasso substituted the figure of the sculptor for that of the Minotaur, while his lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter, appeared with a floral headdress and clearly recognizable traits depicting her as the figure of Arcadia.
Around May of 1933, Picasso produced some of his most Bacchic scenes within the series, possibly responding to a sense of euphoria brought about by his new love. The woman does not fear the Minotaur and raises her glass in celebration.
