After a stay in Barcelona in the summer of 1934, Picasso made a series of works with the theme of the Blind Minotaur, an allegory of the death of the Minotaur that appears in three etchings and an aquatint of the Vollard Suite: Blind Minotaur guided by a girl I, II and III and Blind Minotaur guided by a girl at night.
In this picture, the Minotaur, an old and helpless animal-man who leans on a cane, is guided by a girl. The scene takes place outdoors; in the background, some individuals fish on a boat. On the right, a young man dressed in a striped T-shirt — perhaps the young Picasso himself contemplating the old man — attends the scene.
Beyond any other interpretation, the Minotaur seems to express man's destiny, his existential condition. It should not be forgotten that, on August 19, 1934, Hitler was ratified as Führer of the German nation, an event that must have made a dent in a committed artist like Picasso.
