Joaquim Sunyer’s oeuvre is one of the most representative bodies of work within the aesthetics of Noucentisme. Promoted since 1906 by Eugenio d’Ors (Xènius) in the newspaper La Veu de Catalunya, this movement came to epitomize the Catalan people’s yearning for a combination of modernity and mediterranean classicism. Similar movements parallel to Noucentisme—such as Italian Novecento—also arose throughout Europe in the aftermath of World War I.
This drawing presents an essential and almost mythologized image of Catalan rural life, in which the female nude is integrated into a festive landscape. The depiction of numerous figures undoubtedly contributes to the carefree attitude of the composition. Its range of colors and the way in which the figures are portrayed reaffirms Sunyer’s proximity to other artists of his generation, such as Daniel Vázquez Díaz, who also produced a personal and restrained synthesis of modern French trends.
