In this photograph Graciela Iturbide portrayed an attendee of a Pastorela, a live reenactment that was traditionally used to convert native populations, but over time has become yet another Christmas festivity in Mexican culture. Mesoamerican ritual masks are used during this holiday, combining two initially opposing traditions.
Likewise, Iturbide fuses religious tradition with Roman mythology in this work by giving it the title Jano (Janus), the Roman god with two faces.
