Produced between 1979 and 1986, the work carried out by Graciela Iturbide for the series Juchitán de las mujeres (Women of Juchitán) has deeply influenced her career and has garnered international acclaim.
Juchitán, a town located on the isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, is the bastion of Zapotec culture and a symbol of Indigenous resistance. It is also a world whose social norms were (at the time) somewhat atypical compared to those in the rest of the country.
Midway between poetry and a documentary, Iturbide’s powerful creative universe is revealed through this project, which was developed in Native Mexican communities—much like Los que viven en la arena (Those Who Live in the Sand), which features the Seri or Comcáac people—and constitutes a spectacular debut as a photographer.
