Descripción

Fazal Sheikh’s photographic projects go beyond a documentary interest. His personal involvement and the knowledge he possesses on the subjects being covered give voice to the communities he portrays, allowing their members to speak through his images and narrate their own story. Each project is disseminated by means of a book, which includes texts by the artist or by his subjects, who convey their experiences. Sheikh is usually focused on little known humanitarian crises.

This image is from 2002, when the photographer travelled to north-east Kenya to visit three refugee camps located on the outskirts of Dadaab (Ifo, Hagadera, and Dagahaley) in order to retake an unfished project that he had started at those same camps. The result was featured in the publication A Sense of Common Ground.
