Edith Morris became the muse and the creative focus of Emmet Gowin’s artistic universe from the moment they met. For the photographer, his wife was not only a motif, but also the necessary stimulus to propel his explosive creativity within the context of their family. Gowin portrays the kind of moment one might find anywhere and reminds the viewer of the simplicity and beauty of things that only a few people are able to capture with the necessary poetry and formal elegance to make them appear natural and special.
In this instance, Edith is portrayed with her back facing the camera, her hair in a bun, and her head slightly turned. This photographic moment is also biographical, like most of his work. It is rooted in the depths of his soul and permeates Edith in order to see through her eyes. Her gaze is lost in the blurred landscape, becoming introspective all the while.
