Cristina García Rodero was the first Spanish photographer to become a member of the Magnum agency. Her images portray lived experiences that are sensitive to issues such as poverty, violence, and war.
This embrace between a mother and her sick daughter belongs to the series Georgia, which she began in 1995 and extended until 2013. It stemmed from a commission by Médecins sans Frontières in their effort to denounce the emergency situation that existed in the country after the civil war. García Rodero travelled through a territory of refugees and was interested in portraying the anonymous lives of those who had fled from the conflict, focusing on individual portraits in order to reflect the collectivity. The photograph by García Rodero possesses more of a documentary nature than that of reportage.
