José María Rosa, Albacete, 1970
In 1997 Bleda y Rosa began a project allowing them to encounter the different groups that had inhabited the Iberian Peninsula through history. The artists focused on Iberian, Celtic, Roman, Greek, and Phoenician cities that have disappeared but whose traces survive. Solosancho, Segóbriga, and Empúries were among the places that became subjects of this series entitled Ciudades [Cities], and completed in 2000. From Ciudades [Cities] grew the parallel project Arquitecturas/Estancias (2001-2006).
In order to develop the second project the artists began taking photographs of spaces related to urban life. From that moment onward they became interested in symbolic and monumental locations such as palaces and manors. The photographs depict constructions that are political, forming spaces that are historically relevant or seats of power, and, at the same time, intimate, as spaces that belonged to those who inhabited them. The images freeze specific areas of the buildings, highlighting the corners and columns that support the structures, as can be observed in the photograph of the Knossos palace hall.
